Precious Metals
The three precious metals most often used in jewellery are gold, platinum, and silver. They all share four basic qualities that make them desirable and usable in jewellery:
To ensure that strict standards are met in the purity of precious metals used in jewellery, each new piece is tested by a government office, called an Assay Office, to ensure that they reach a strict standard. Once a piece reaches these standards the piece is stamped with a mark stating it's purity. This stamp is called a hallmark.
